I wrote this paper in my Writing for the Internet class in Spring 2012. We were required to analyze the paradigmatic shift between printed texts and digital texts. We had to do research on the topic and incorporate it into our paper. Even though I was familiar with writing papers before this class, the subject matter was completely different. I had written papers analyzing the shift from print to digital before, but this one in particular truly opened my eyes to some of the issues I will be facing as a future writer. I chose to focus on the decline of printed books and the rise of electronic reading devices. This topic idea came easily to me, because I have witnessed the shift towards electronic, screen-based reading; I wanted to understand how and why this shift happened as well as its effect on readers and writers. Because I had such vigor for writing this paper, I was proud of the conclusions I drew, and I was also happy with my incorporation of a variety of sources--journal articles, books, and online newspaper articles. Writing this paper gave me a better understanding of professional and technical writing, which I think is a wonderful outcome of the class.
